Letting the Genie Out of the Bottle

XSEED Games is renowned for launching top-notch titles from Japan and elsewhere into the North American market to rave reviews. At E3 this year the publisher is offering gamers a massive lineup of exciting games—all set for release in the back half of 2016.

First among these is Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, the latest installment of the tremendously popular platformer. This time, the titular Shantae has to summon her genie powers and her powerful ponytail to save her home, Sequin Land, from her pirating arch-nemesis Risky Boots. Half-Genie Hero is the first Shantae title to appear in full HD, and promises plenty of exploration, action, huge boss fights, and the series’ trademark sense of humor—all coming this fall for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Wii U, and PlayStation Vita.

Another new entry in a beloved series is the fan-favorite Story of Seasons: Trio of Towns. This entry lets players return to the detailed farming and slice-of-life adventures that the Story of Seasons games are known for, but in a larger and more detailed world than ever. Trio of Towns releases this winter for Nintendo 3DS.

Also coming for 3DS this summer is Corpse Party, the cult-classic horror/adventure title from Japan. Already a success on the PlayStation Portable, Corpse Party is getting an upgrade on 3DS with four additional chapters, expanded story scenes, redrawn character sprites, and newly arranged music. Player choices are key to Corpse Party, since these choices not only determine how the story ends, but which characters live to see the ending.

Another new addition to a much loved indie series will be at XSEED’s booth in the form of The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II, coming to PS Vita and PS3 this fall. Both new Legend of Heroes games combine the best of traditional Japanese role-playing with tactical, turn-based combat, and a huge cast of characters and allies for the player. Trails of Cold Steel II picks up a month after the previous title left off, and puts players back in the shoes of Rean, a reluctant warrior who survived a cataclysm because of his friends’ sacrifice.

Finally, XSEED is showing a trio of exciting action titles from Japanese developers: Exile’s End for PS4, PS Vita, and Wii U, Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star for PS4 and PS Vita, and Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity for PS4. Each of these titles brings a heavy dose of action and combines it with the unique aesthetic and sensibility of the best Japanese design studios.

With such a diverse lineup appealing to fans of all ages and tastes, XSEED Games truly brings something for everyone to E3 2016, while showcasing some of the best of what Japan has to offer.
